Suhaib Rumi, the prominent companion of the Prophet:

Suhaib was a prominent companion of the Prophet Muhammad, he is famous with the name of suhaib Rumi, before Islam he spent some years as a slave. Several ayat of the Quran descended about him, he used to live in Makkah, there was his own slaves, property etc. Once he planned to migrate from Makkah to Madina, in between the way to Madina he was gripped by a powerful man and wanted to bring him back to Makkah, he requested and said I am giving you my all property in exchange to free me and let me go to Madina, they agreed, when he reached in rendezvous of the Prophet Muhammad PBH, the prophet said: you have done so good deal. then this Ayat revealed: And among the people is he who sells his soul seeking the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is most kind to his servants. (Suratul_baqrah:270)
He was nearest to the Umar bin Al-Khattab, the second Caliph of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
Suhayb was nominated by the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab to lead the Muslims in prayers for some time.
As Umar lay dying after being stabbed by Abu-Lu'lu'ah on November 1, 644, he summoned Uthman ibn Affan, Ali, Talhah, Zubayr ibn al-Awam, Abdur Rahman bin Awf, and Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas and instructed them to consult among themselves and with the Muslims for three days and choose a successor.
In this brief intermediate period before Uthman’s appointment, Suhayb was responsible for leading prayers.
The Prophet described love for him necessary for faith. He said: Whoever has faith in God and Last Day should love him like a mother loves her child.
A Persian  poet said:
حسن ز بصرہ بلال از حبش صہیب از روم
زخاک مکہ ابوجہل این چہ بوالعجبی است
